Senior Geotechnical Field Engineer II – Chelmsford, MA

Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) is a dynamic and growing geotechnical engineering and consulting firm with offices in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and Armonk, New York. We are seeking a Geotechnical Field Engineer II with 3-6 years of geotechnical engineering experience to join our Massachusetts office.

Position Summary:

This role is ideal for an experienced geotechnical engineer who enjoys balancing field operations with engineering analysis. Approximately 50%-70% of the role will involve fieldwork, with the remaining time dedicated to engineering analysis, reporting, and design support. Periodic travel, including occasional overnight assignments, will be required to support projects throughout New England and the Northeast.

As a Geotechnical Field Engineer II, you will play a key role in overseeing field investigations and testing programs while interpreting data and providing engineering recommendations to clients and project teams.

Responsibilities:

Field Responsibilities:

  • Perform geotechnical field investigations and construction observation.
  • Oversee foundation construction inspections.
  • Monitor and inspect drilling and boring operations.
  • Perform pile testing, install instrumentation, and monitor.
  • Conduct static and dynamic load testing.
  • Coordinate field testing activities with contractors and project teams.
  • Ensure testing is performed in accordance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Prepare detailed field reports and documentation.

Office Responsibilities:

  • Analyze geotechnical testing data and prepare engineering reports.
  • Perform design and analysis of deep and shallow foundation systems.
  • Evaluate pile load testing and drilled shaft performance.
  • Assist in developing technical recommendations for clients.
  • Support proposal preparation and project planning.
  • Mentor junior engineers and field staff as experience allows.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • 3-6 years of geotechnical engineering experience with a strong interest in foundation engineering, field testing, and construction support.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred; Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is a plus.
  • Experience with deep foundation construction, instrumentation, pile testing, or geotechnical investigations is highly desirable.

  • Ability to work independently in the field and manage multiple assignments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation systems and basic electronics is beneficial.
  • Willingness to work overtime when project schedules require.
  • Ability to travel, including occasional overnight assignments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and traverse uneven terrain and construction sites safely.
