Davis Barracks Central Chiller Plant Foundation Design

Established in 1801, the United State Military Academy (USMA) is the oldest occupied military post in the U.S. The campus features many historically significant buildings including the new military gothic-style Davis Barracks, sighted below the famous Cadet Chapel.  Rising nearly 60 feet above the barracks and adjacent to the Chapel sits the site of Central Chiller plant.

The US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) awarded Kokolakis Contracting of New York, a federal contract to construct the Central Chiller Plant and Distribution system to supply chilled water to nine (9) other barracks in the central area. Kokolakis subcontracted Moretrench America Corporation (Moretrench) to install forty two (42) 30-inch diameter drilled caissons.  Early site investigations indicated that the Chiller Plant site consisted of unclassified Blast rock fill material, representing a differing site condition. Kokolakis subsequently retained GTR Engineering of New York (GTR) to perform a series of supplemental test borings and prepare Geotechnical Data Report summarizing our findings.  GTR’s role expanded to include foundation recommendations and re-design from contract design 30-inch drilled caissons to 12-3/4-inch diameter drilled micropiles.

Additional engineering services GTR provided under contract with Moretrench included executing a drilled micropile static load test program, on-site quality control and video inspection of each drilled rock socket.
