Seaport District Commercial Development

As Design Engineer of Record, GTR developed and executed several subsurface exploration programs, foundation design and consulting services for 5 commercial properties, highlighted by the Boston Sword and Tuna property, in Boston’s Seaport District.  Geotechnical design and construction issues included a deep foundation feasibility study for the varying miscellaneous debris fill layer that was up to 60 feet deep within the former Navy Pier located in South Boston.

GTR designed and tested a drilled micro-pile foundation system for support of the foundation of the Boston Sword and Tuna building while subsequent projects were still in the bidding and/or design phase. Groundwater infiltration into the building during severe weather events was modeled to aid in the building resiliency during flood events. GTR performed a static load test on an instrumented sacrificial test pile to determine the ultimate bond stress of the bedrock for the micro-piles. The ultimate bond stress was then used to waive the load test requirements for the other building across the site.

GTR also completed earthwork and micro-pile specifications, reviewed contractor’s bids with the owner, reviewed contractor’s submittals to ensure compliance with the project documents. GTR field staff performed inspection services during all micro-pile installation and earthwork activities.
