The Kosciuszko Bridge over Newtown Creek in Kings and Queens County, New York, which included a new 1.1 mile viaduct, required approximately 600 driven 18-inch OD steel pipe piles for the bridge pier and abutment foundations and 7-foot diameter drilled shafts for the main tower foundations and Pier 13 foundation.
Granite Construction retained Case Foundation / Keller to install the drilled shafts who in turn engaged GTR to perform lateral load testing of the demonstration shaft. As part of the CM/GC team, GTR performed Cross-hole Sonic Logging (CSL), Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP), instrumentation and performance of the demonstration shaft lateral load test, bi-direction load tests, lateral load testing and Crosshole Tomography (CT), to further evaluate the drill shaft integrity.
Granite selected GTR to perform pile testing including dynamic pile load testing (PDA) on over seventy (70) test piles. GTR also instrumented and executed a comprehensive pile load test program including static compression load testing in accordance with ASTM standards and provided fulltime on-site quality control throughout pile installation.
